'OASIS' HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE

Visitors to the school have commented on the school uniform and the pride which pupils take in wearing it. In this, senior pupils - especially the Prefect body - have continued to set an excellent example. However, this is not followed by some pupils. Why is this so? Is it because some parents refuse to co-operate? Or is it because some pupils have no pride in their personal appearance or in their school?

There are sound reasons for encouraging the wearing of school uniforms. It is both an economical and a serviceable form of dress. It is also democratic: put on a school uniform and you put off any distinction of class or economic circumstance. In this way the child of poor circumstances can feel he is the equal of his more fortunate classmates. Thus the school uniform is of importance to the individual pupil, for it builds up his self-confidence and fosters a proper pride in his appearance.

To an equal degree it is important to the school itself, for it plays a major part in developing a sense of responsibility and school pride.

'OASIS' STUDENT EDITORIAL

Because this year of 1953 has been momentous in British history, it is appropriate that this editorial should refer to the two great events of the year: the Coronation of our Queen and the conquering of Mount Everest.

All were grieved at the death of our King, George VI, but were partly consoled by the accession of one so young, who was to become our Queen, Elizabeth II. Let us pray that God will grant wisdom and understanding to her in her great task - the leadership of the British Empire; but let us lighten her burden as much as we can by being sympathetic and loyal.

Perhaps it is prophetic - a sign that her reign might be as great as that of her namesake, Elizabeth I - that, on the eve of her coronation, mankind made another wonderful achievement - the climbing of Mt Everest. It is fitting that the party should have been led by an Englishman, the actual achievement made by a man from one of the Queen's dominions.

With the memory of these two events at the back of our mind and the thought of the Queen's visit early next year, may we take the example of our Queen and look forward with faith and courage to what the future may bring.

STUDENT WORK

SPRING
By Valerie Ryan (Yr 3B)

The frisky lambs are dancing
In the meadows by the lane,
The little boy is playing
With his silver aeroplane,
The happy birds are singing
A pretty little tune,
And the flowers in the garden
Are blooming just for you!
