TIME CAPSULE

'OASIS' HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE

1961 will remain a memorable year in the School's history. We have occupied the New Wing, with its 13 classrooms, its administrative offices and the beautiful Assembly Hall. There has been further development of the sports fields; in particular, the girls' area, that wasteland of not so long ago is being transformed into 3 hockey fields and 12 basketball courts set amongst more than 200 young trees and shrubs.

In the academic field important advances have been made, among them the purchase of many of the best modern textbooks, the introduction of the S.R.A Reading Laboratories and the preparations for the Wyndham "new look" in 1962.

Now the enrichment of your environment, inside and outside the school, does not just happen. You yourselves, under the guidance of your teachers, have played your part. But you also owe a debt of gratitude to the Education Department, to the Wade Shire Council, to the P&C, to the business and professional community, to the Ladies' Auxiliary (especially for their wonderful service in the Canteen) and to many other people of goodwill.

But yours is the responsibility to make the most of all these opportunities so that you can go forth from Griffith High as well-balanced young citizens, in whose hands Australia's future will be safe.

Good luck to you all, and my best wishes especially to those of you who are leaving us this year!

STUDENT WORK

DESERT
By Cathy Jennings (Yr 1A)

It has a beauty of its own,
A harsh, lonely beauty,
Never ending, never stopping,
Free to roam am I o'er plains and dunes,
Vast and far.
Its multitude of restless sands,
I cannot mar.
