However, I cannot emphasize too much or too often, that the School does try to achieve something more than academic results. Foremost among these aspirations are training for good citizenship, encouragement of respect for authority and the development of the ability to live in co-operation and harmony with fellow beings.
That some measure of success is being attained is indicated by the whole hearted co-operation that is readily forthcoming, the generous response to appeals for assistance and the genuine pride in the Griffith High School that is so evident in the community outside.

"H.M.S PINAFORE"
'Pinafore' was presented at the end of second term. Near capacity attendance on each performance was evidence of the success of the production - due to the hard work put in by the cast (main leads pictured above) and producers (Mr Boxall and Mr Williams).
The musical directors were Miss McCormack and Mr Leadbitter, who were aided by fifth former Leith Dossetor. The choreography was under the direction of Miss Adam. The backdrop was painted by fifth form art class under the supervision of Mrs Walker and the scenery was made by Mr Bardsley. The colourful costumes were the skilful work of Allen and the Home Science Department.
The romantic leads were Judith Cashmere (who played Josephine, the captain's daughter) and Ian Callan (who played Ralph Rackstraw, the Tar). Peter Reynolds performed as Sir Joseph ("the Ruler of the Queen's Navee") and David Gibson was the Captain of the "Pinafore" (Josephine's father). Deadeye was acted by Jim Rolfe and Debbie Cox was Buttercup, the Bumboat woman. Special mention should be given to Marlene O'Connor who on short notice played Buttercup in the first matinee. The girls' chorus of cousins and aunts was led by Rosemary Hoare (who was Cousin Hebe), while the boys' chorus of drunken sailors was led by Denis Couch (the Boatswain).
DROUGHT
By Helen Geltch (Form 1)
The long green grass where once stood,
Is now nothing but dust and dead grey wood,
Has the rain left us - forgotten us this year?
Our hopes are in vain - will no-one hear?
The bones of sheep and cattle that died,
Are lying around the countryside,
The rays of the sun on the dry dusty ground,
The long green grass will never be found.
Poor old Sam is praying for rain,
If this keeps up - he will never stay sane,
He tills the ground 'till he's quite worn out,
But poor old Sam, he ne'er wins a bout.
But the gods are merciless,
They take no heed,
They send no rain to us,
To help grow our seed.
