Special guests at our Term 3 formal assembly were the school captains from 1953 - Mr Wal Cooper and Mrs Shirley Calabria (nee Byford). Mr Cooper spoke to us about how important a school magazine was to record the life of a school and hoped that we still had a magazine. He was delighted to hear that not only have we had a magazine for the last few years, but that it still has the same name as it did fifty years ago! There would not be a magazine (just as there would not be any sporting trips, excursions, school reports, timetables ... the list just goes on) if it were not for the incredible amount of work staff at Griffith High School are prepared to put in after hours to make things happen. I would like to thank all staff and students who have been involved in this year's magazine - it is a credit to you and a testament to the hard work you have been prepared to do. A special thank you to our editor, Miss Venessa Horne.
While I am thanking people, I would like to thank ALL staff for all your contributions over the year. Everyone thinks they know what goes on in a school because everyone went to school at one time or another. Until you work in a school you really are not aware of the huge amounts of time and effort teaching and support staff put into their jobs to make Griffith High School a great place to work and learn. Thank you all, and I mean each and every one of you!
Once I start listing all the high points for 2003, it will get tricky, as there will always be things left off the list. Having said that, I will "stick my neck out" and write briefly about some of the things which have really meant a lot to me.
Firstly, we had two new Deputy Principals appointed, and what a great team they have been! Mr Fox and Ms Martin have made so many significant contributions to our school in a very short time. I think specially of the Honours Awards which Ms Martin introduced this year and the changes she made to our Year 10 subject selection process which made a big difference to the way Year 10 and their parents were supported as they made decisions which impact on the rest of their lives. I think of the fantastic Multicultural Celebration Mr Fox organised and the very successful Year 12 Drama Night. There is so much more I could add, but I'm going to run out of room.
Griffith High School was fortunate to have a Teacher Mentor appointed, to look after all our newly appointed teachers. As we have had at least 15 newly appointed teachers this year, this could not have happened at a better time. Mrs Davis has been able to support all of them. The first few years of teaching are not easy and everyone has really appreciated all Mrs Davis has been able to do. I would also like to thank all our new teachers for everything you have done this year. It has been a pleasure working with you.
We also welcomed two new Head Teachers - Mr Thompson in Social Science and Mr Garvey in Mathematics. They have also made a good start in their new roles.
There have been successes in so many areas - in the academic field, not only at school level where so many students have been able to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in a wide range of subjects, but also in State and National competitions; in sporting competitions; in public speaking and other cultural pursuits. I could not leave out Jy Millis' Minister's Award for Excellence in Student Achievement (our fourth Minister's Award in five years!). Congratulations Jy. Also worthy of mention was the group of Year 7 students who took part in "Beyond the Frame" - an art project with a difference, which culminated in a special exhibition called "Paintsticks" at the Griffith Art Gallery. The three art works our students created were excellent. Congratulations to the students involved and their teacher, Miss Rae.
The biggest sussesses are often those we don't hear about. I am thinking of all the students who try their hardest every day - who realise how important it is to learn everything they can while they are at school so that they have as many options as possible open to them when they leave school. They are good citizens now and they will continue to make positive contributions to their communities, wherever they end up living. These students are our success stories. Congratulations to you all.
Our School Council, P & C Association and our Student Representative Council have again served us all well this year. As a result of years of representations to the Department of Education and Training, especially by the School Council's energetic secretary, Mrs Ester Hookey, another highlight of the year was the announcement that we would receive $130,000 for airconditioning. I have been told that it should be installed by the start of the 2004 school year. We can therefore look forward to a cooler 2004!

OUR LOVE IS DEAD
By Ashleigh Hillsley (Yr 9)
Everything I wanted to be and
Ever time I walked away
Every time you told me to leave
I just wanted to stay.
Every time you looked at me
And every time you smiled
I felt so vacant
You treated me like a child.
I loved the way we used to laugh
I loved the way we used to smile
Often I sit down and
Think of you for a while.
Then it passes me by and
I think of someone else instead
I guess the love we once had is
Officially DEAD!
ANZACS
By Tamikka Lane (Yr 9)
I am an ANZAC.
I stand tall and proud.
The battle is blazing.
The gunshots are loud.
Down I am crouching
In a stagnant filled hole.
Fighting these battles,
Fulfilling my role.
We fought with honour.
We fought with might.
Forced the enemy
Away from our sight.
Friends and family are dying
Getting shot dead.
With a bang and a blast
And a shot to the head.
We can't bury you now
Our glorious dead.
But back in Australia
You'll have freedom instead.
Every year we celebrate.
The ANZAC tall and proud.
Who gave their lives for freedom
But did not mutter, but one sound.
