WRITING SCIENTIFIC REPORTS

A Scientific Report is an accurate record of what we did in an investigation. They should be neat, easy to read and not too long.

Diagrams in the report should be drawn with a PENCIL and RULER and should be LABELLED. As a general rule, diagrams should be "SCAB":

DOTSimple (S)
DOTClear (C)
DOTAnd (A)
DOTBig (B)

All reports should have the following sections:

HEADING WHAT TO WRITE HOW TO WRITE IT
AIM What do you think you were trying to do or find out in this investigation? Write a short, single statement beginning with the word "To ..."
METHOD Describe in your own words exactly what you did. Include diagrams to show how equipment was set up.
  • Write each step in point form
  • Use the word "we" instead of "I"
  • Use past tense ("was" and "were", etc)
RESULTS
  • Tables of results
  • Relevant graphs
  • Diagrams
If you made a model or product, say "Refer to ..."
CONCLUSION What did you learn from this investigation? Write a few short sentences explaining what you found out.

Some investigations might require you to answer a series of QUESTIONS. Your teacher will inform you whether the questions should be answered:

DOTAfter the CONCLUSION under the heading QUESTIONS

OR

DOTBetween the RESULTS and CONCLUSION under the heading DISCUSSION.
